Just as every big city in the world has a big exhibition hall for trade shows, so does Kyoto. But unlike any other city, Kyoto's exhibit centre has a (no so well) hidden gem: the Traditional Crafts Museum. And every Sunday afternoon from 3 to 4pm you will have the unique opportunity to see maikos and geishas perform. For free! Shows last 15 minutes and start at 2:00pm, 2:30pm and 3:00pm. The museum has a lot more things, including ateliers where you can do traditional Japanese things. Top Gear Top Tip! Besides, it would be rude to refuse to go in to the grand-pa who is gathering tourists outside the building. ;-)
The performance is really a unique opportunity, as having a maiko perform for you will cost you about 1000 euros/dollars. There's of course a few caveats: it's short (but you can watch all three shows) and you can't take pictures when they dance (it's OK before and after). They're also not there for you but for everyone, so you can't really chat with them. But it's fracking free...
