Horin-ji (founded in 713) is a relatively large temple located in the hill just south of the Katsura river in the Arashiyama district of Kyoto. Its terrace offers a nice view of the surrounding area but it may be closed for repairs. The stairs leading to the temple are also very nice in autumn if you can face the crowd.
Note that a second temple with exactly the same name exists in Kyoto. Luckily the latter is more often called "Daruma-dera".
