Joshoko-ji is one of the northernmost temples of Kyoto city. It was founded in 1362. The place is famous for a very old cherry blossom tree, now a protected species, called "kokonoe sakura" (九重桜). The tree is so famous that people will come from Kyoto in April with the sole purpose of seeing it. Then again, it was planted in 1333 by emperor Kogon (光厳天皇) himself!
Unlike most temples, photography is allowed everywhere in Joshoko-ji, including in the main hall which contains several interesting wooden statues.
