Hidden in the center of Kyoto, this temple was empty when I visited it during the Gion festival, completely oblivious to all the tumultuous activity just a block away. It's one of those 'authentic' temples that survive not on tourists but on local patrons. As such the random visitor will not find Byodo-ji particularly interesting without some bit of history that I unfortunately do not possess...
