Jōfuku-ji (浄福寺)

Jōfuku-ji (浄福寺)

Jofuku-ji is a large temple in the western centre of Kyoto. Its grounds are open to the public year round, with the ubiquitous kindergarten and a couple of sub-temples. The buildings, however, are private and only accessible during special visits organized every (couple) of years. Unfortunately photography is not allowed, but there's not much for the photographer anyway. The inner zen garden, for example, is not particularly impressive or well tended.

One particularity of this temple is its main hall which consists of two buildings. At first the temple didn't have enough money to make a big hall so they started with a smaller one. It was later extended, but special care was taken to make the two parts fuse seamlessly, at least from the inside.
