Honnō-ji (本能寺)

Honnō-ji (本能寺)

Honno-ji (本能寺) is the only large temple in Kyoto that is surrounded by tall buildings almost all around. Most temples of its size occupy an entire city block and there for have little concerns about neighbouring towers, but Honno-ji must have sold part of its land in its history to have the "concrete" treatment it now has. Mind you, the temple doesn't seem to care much as the first building you will encounter after passing through its gate is an ugly automated car park. The temple offices are also located in a modern concrete building with some traditional features (roof/tiles/structure) to make it (unsuccessfully) look vaguely traditional. This modern/traditional contrast can provide a few interesting photo opportunities though.

Several sub-temples are lined-up along the southern side of the yard, but as far as I know none of them is open to the public.
